About Us
Our 40th is an Independent Political Organization (IPO) that organizes for racial, social, environmental, and economic justice in the 40th ward and in the City of Chicago.
Our Values
-
Anti-racism: We ground our work in anti-racism and recognize our responsibility to dismantle white supremacy, along with Chicago's legacy of segregation, particularly on the north side of the city where our ward is located.

-
Equity: We recognize the impacts of systemic oppression in our society. We advance efforts that ensure everyone is heard and has what they need to thrive, particularly Black people, Indigenous people, People of Color, migrants and refugees, LGBTQ+ people, people with disabilities, and women.

-
Accessible and sustainable public goods: We believe that a responsive and just government is the primary way to build and sustain public goods that make Chicago a city for everyone. We fight for affordable housing and an end to displacement, resourced and accessible public transportation, safe streets, beautiful public parks, environmentally sustainable infrastructure, thriving neighborhood schools, a living wage in the workplace, a justice system in which all are treated equally; and an economy that works for the many, not the few.

-
Accountability: As an organization, we strive to hold each other, our elected officials, and other stakeholders, decision-makers, influencers, and other authorities of power within our community accountable to commitments and decisions that affect the whole of our community. All of us are accountable to the goals that we have identified as important to our community. We advocate for transparency in the decision-making process of our representatives as well as our own group. Decisions will be made democratically, and those who are most impacted will take part in the decision-making process.

-
Building community, a “bigger we”: We believe that in these times of isolation, uncertainty, and polarization, our organizing must aim to build a “bigger we”. We strive to meet people where they are, find shared values, and move work that creates solutions for our ward, city, and state that make room for the many over the few. We believe that in order to win the world we want, we must make an effort to understand and move each other around shared values, vision, and outcomes as much as possible.
